Oggetto: Alessandro Lucchesi (born c.1830) Lucca
Hi

I am looking for information on Alessandro Lucchesi who was born c.1830-1834 in Lucca Province.

He was the son of Paolo (or Paolino) Lucchesi.

Alessandro was a Plaster Figure Maker.

He moved to Great Britain and married there in 1859.

No one is sure which town he came from, but it has been suggested that Paolo (Paolino) may have died in Gallicano in 1878 (if this si the correct person).

Can anybody find any information on Alessandro, or is the information too vague?

Thanks,

Darin.

Hi,
I think it's difficult a research of that type, Lucchesi is a surname very common in Lucca Province.

However I haven't found Paolo/Paolino's death in Gallicano from 1870 up to 1886.

Also Bagni di Lucca, Barga and Coreglia Antelminelli are the home of figurine makers (in Italian "figurinai").

On FamilySearch site I've found only the death of a plaster figure maker called Agostino Lucchesi, aged 20, from Gallicano, happened in a Berlin hospital in 1877 (transcribed in 1881 in Gallicano Civil Status register).
His relative is Carlo Lucchesi, his parents' names are not mentioned.

Erica

Thanks Erica.

I had heard of those towns being the home of the Plaster Figure Makers, but my other ancestors (Mazzei) were from Colognora in Pescaglia and they were also Plaster Figure Makers.

Thanks again

Hi,
I've found something more on Ancestry website, which you may find it useful (if you haven't already find it):

- a genealogical tree with that note: "Alessandro (or John as he sometimes went by) was an Image Maker. Listed in 1860 as a labourer, he soon moved onto Image maker in 1861 census when he lived as a newly wed in Bristol ( under the name John Lucas).
The business of producing plaster figures became associated with immigrant Italian workers, mainly from the province of Lucca, who would come to London in groups and who would sell plaster figures on the streets. Indeed, the image of a youth holding aloft a tray of plaster figures became one of the 19th-century ‘Cries of London’ ".

- some infos from Ancestry Message Boards:

His father is mentioned as Paul in a posted message or as Pasquale in that tree I told you above.

Alessandro was born about 1833 in Lucca, Italy and died in October 1894 in Glamorganshire, UK.
Is he the person you are looking for? However still lacks to understand where he was born...

Hi again

I've found an interesting death of a Paolino Lucchesi in Bagni di Lucca in 1868.

He was aged 80 and the record states he was from Granaiola.

However, records for Bagni di Lucca don't start until 1851.

How do I find if there was an Alessandro / Andrea Lucchesi born in Bagni di Lucca (possibly) Granaiola c.1820-1840.

Thanks again

Darin.

You have to search his Baptism Act. You have to contact the Bagni di Lucca Church.

Are you sure??? Can you post it?
In Bagni di Lucca death register for 1868 there is only a female baby, Lucchesi Paolina, daughter of Luigi Lucchesi from Limano (act n.211).

However for Granaiola church records I think you can also contact Lucca Diocesan Archive and here you can find useful church details (Parish priest : don Ascanio Giampaoli) :

Please, keep in mind that "Lucca placed Granaiola under the parish of Coreglia, then under Borgo a Mozzano where it remained until the 19thcentury. In 1890 the villages of Granaiola, Pieve and Monti di Villa requested at Rome if they could be part of Bagni di Lucca, this happened in 1893".
So if you are searching for civil status records of Granaiola you should look at Borgo a Mozzano records up to 1893, after that at Bagni di Lucca, an example:

Yes, now I understand... This act is in Borgo a Mozzano death register.

Paolino died at home, in Granaiola in a place called Al Camajone.

Paolino's wife was Pucci Luisa.

The declarant Luigi Lucchesi was Paolino's son.
He was 41 yo (born a. 1827), landowner from Granaiola.

Thanks Erica.

It's a pity neither death act mentions Paolino's occupation, as according to his son's (Alessandro / Andrea's marriage certificate in England 1859, Paolino's occupation was a 'basket maker.'

Thanks again.
