Last year with the gracious help of the volunteers on this site I was able to follow the ancestry of my father’s family back seven generations.

This year I am hoping to learn more about my mother’s family. If anyone can help me document the ancestors of Dominic Telesco and his wife Grace Colangelo, it would be greatly appreciated.

Based on US Census records it appears that Dominic immigrated to America in 1887 at the age of 4 along with his mother Catherine Telesco. I have not however, been able to locate the ship or passenger list for the voyage to America.

Thank you for the information on Caterina! Unfortunately I have not been able to find any information about Domenico' father. I would guess that he arrived in America first and then sent for Caterina and Domenico.

I reviewed the Act of Birth for Caterina but had difficulty reading the surname and the parents’ names. If someone could help me with the names, it would be appreciated. I ask because I believe Telesco was Caterina's married name rather than her maiden name.

Also I have heard that Telesca is a much more common name in Avigliano than Telesco. I wonder if Domenico's surname could have originally been Telesca before arriving in America.

Il padre di Caterina era Tommaso Telesca di anni 27, figlio del già deceduto Vito, e la madre Rosa Maria Fermo di anni 26.

Tommaso e Rosa si sono sposati il 5 marzo 1848.

Tommaso era figlio del deceduto Vito e della vivente Caterina Giordano ed era vedovo di Beatrice de Lucia; Rosa Maria era figlia di Nicola e della defunta Domenica Colangelo.

Questo è il precedente matrimonio di Tommaso, celebrato il 30 aprile 1846. Il padre Vito era già deceduto.

La persona di riferimento nella lista di leva del 1918 è Vita Crescenza Telesco. Il vero nome di Grace potrebbe essere Vita Crescenza Colangelo.

In un precedente messaggio di questa conversazione, Charles ha detto che anche lui crede che Telesco fosse il cognome del marito.

This is your maternal grandfather's (Dominic Telesco's) obituary, three sisters are listed: Mary Carriero, Margaret Gigante and Susan Sabia.

I found a Margaret Gigante resting in the same cemetery of your Nonno, I believe she's the right person:

Thank you “ziadani”. You have made a great discovery and solved a mystery for me!. I could not figure out who Vita Criscenta Tesesco was, but based on the evidence you have presented, she surely is Domenica’s wife named Grace in America.

Regarding Domenico’s birth date, I used the birth date that was on the two Draft Registration cards, but I do not know for sure if the date is correct.

Regarding Domenico’s surname, I have only seen Telesco on the US documents, but since Telesca is a much more common name in Avigliano, I suspect that Telesca may have been the original name in Italy.

Thank you “ciao457”. Based on the 1920 US Census Caterina and her son Domenico (age 4) immigrated to America together in 1887. It appears that the three sisters were born after that in America. But I wonder where is the husband and father?

Vita Crescenza, nata nel 1884 circa, viaggiava con il fratello Vito, nato nel 1880 circa.
Bisogna cercare a Avigliano i fratelli Vito e Vita Colangelo.

Inoltre, se è stata rispettata la tradizione, il primo figlio di Domenico si chiamava Canio dovrebbe portare il nome del nonno.

Probably this is your Nonna, but we have no evidence.

Earlier, Ziadani posted an immigration card for a set of siblings, Vita and Vito Colangelo from Avigliano, they were reaching their uncle Donato Colangelo in Buffalo.
I located an immigration card for a Donato Colangelo from Avigliano, that in 1904 was reaching his brother Nicola. This Donato was going to Westchester.
