- In reply to you inquiry of 29 March 2009 concerning Vincenzo Castellucci, I wish to advise you that information about how to start your family history research can be found in the "How to Begin" section of our Canadian Genealogy Centre website
www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy .
Please note that the place of residence must be known in order to undertake a meaningful search in Canadian sources.
Information about our passenger lists and how to access those microfilm reels can be found on our Canadian Genealogy Centre website
www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy under What to Search - Topics: Immigration and Citizenship: Passenger Lists 1865-1935. Lists of microfilm reel numbers are provided. The lists are arranged by port and date of arrival rather than alphabetically by name.
Most of our passenger lists for 1865 to 1922 have been digitized and can be viewed on our website at
www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/p ... dex-e.html. The Search Help page provides information about the records and how to obtain copies.
Through partnerships and other resources, Library and Archives Canada is working towards having nominal indexes created for our passenger lists. Currently, an index is available free on our website for Quebec arrivals, 1865-1900:
www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/p ... dex-e.html.
Indexes for all ports for the period 1865 to 1922 can be searched on the websites
www.ancestry.ca and
www.ancestry.com , which are a fee-based subscription database service. We cannot do comprehensive searches in those indexes; however, a cursory search on your behalf failed to produce a reference to Vincenzo Castellucci in the period of interest to you. If you do not have a subscription to Ancestry, it might be available at your local public library, genealogical society or FamilyHistoryCenter:
www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/022-800-e.html.
Please note that spelling variations of names were common before the mid-1900s. Many names were written phonetically, as they sounded to the person recording them. Also, databases often contain indexing errors due to poor handwriting in the original records or the poor legibility of some pages. If you do not find a name in a database, we recommend that you search the actual records.
Our main immigration web page includes suggestions for other types of records that might assist you in determining the year of arrival.
The website
www.ancestorsonboard.com provides an index to the passenger lists in the custody of the National Archives in England for ships departing from the British Isles from 1890 to 1960. Those lists also include passengers in transit from other countries. You can search the index for free, but there is a charge to view a transcript of the entry of the actual image.
The civil registration of births, marriages and deaths is a provincial and territorial responsibility. Information about those records, including how and where to access them, can be found on our Canadian Genealogy Centre website

It may interest you to know that the Archives of Ontario records have been digitized and indexed by name at
www.ancestry.ca and
www.ancestry.com , which are fee-based subscription database services.
If Vincenzo Castellucci was still living in Canada in 1940, information about him might be found in the 1940 National Registration records in the custody of Statistics Canada. Those records include details such as date and place of birth, year of immigration, work history, military service, etc. For more information, please consult our Canadian Genealogy Centre website
www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy under What to Search - Topics: Census and Enumeration: 1940 National Registration.
