Hoping somebody can telephone a church for me

Messaggio da mazzie74 »

Hi

I have enquired about help with finding baptism / marriage records from the church that my ancestors lived, and in response have been given the telephone number of the priest.

I have wrote to this church before and haven't received a reply, so I feel that speaking to the priest is the best option.

However, I am not very good at conversing on the phone and also I can't speak Italian so I am worried that I may not get my point across, and therefore hindering any future chances of success.

Would some kind person contact the priest on my behalf?

The church is in Chiozza, Castiglione di Garfagnana (Tuscany).

The information I am looking for is:

1). baptism of Maria Rosa Guazzelli (daughter of Marco) - born in Chiozza approximately 1784-1786.

2). Marriage of the above Maria Rosa Guazzelli to Iacopo Mazzei (son of Pellegrino) (approximately 1805-1810).

3). Baptism of Luigi Mazzei (son of Iacopo and Maria Rosa Guazzelli) - born approximately 1808-1810.

4). Possible baptism of Stella Mazzei (daughter of Iacopo and Maria Rosa Guazzelli) born approximately 1805-1818.

I would be also interested in any other Mazzei's that might show up from 1805-1818.

If successful, would I be able to receive jpeg images from the full page of the register? (If the priest can't do this maybe a local resident could take an image).

The priests name is Don Raffaello.

His number is:

058571942

Thanks

Darin

Hi Darin,
since October 2014 the priest is Don Giovanni Grassi.
As well as becoming priest of Pieve Fosciana, he keeps the parishes of Castiglione Garfagnana, Cerageto, Chiozza, Mozzanella, Campori and Valbona.

You can write him a letter to this address:
http://www.paginebianche.it/castelnuovo ... .afidgcdei
http://www.diocesilucca.it/parrocchie.p ... chie&id=60

Remember that Baptism registers of Chiozza start in 1790, as written here:
http://www.diocesilucca.it/parrocchie.p ... chie&id=68
so you probably won't find here the baptism of Maria Rosa Guazzelli, but you should find it maybe in S. Pietro Church in Castiglione.

Hi

My aunt is taking a holiday to Lucca at the end of August, and is staying a few miles outside of Castiglione di Garfagnana.

She asked if there is anything she can help me with while she is there.

She doesn't do genealogy, and she doesn't speak Italian.

I wouldn't expect her to spend money as she is on a vacation and isn't going to specifically help me, she just thought she may help me if she is near Castiglione.

My question is, if she turns up at the church in Chiozza, Castiglione di Garfganana - what is the likelihood of the priest allowing her to look at the baptism and marriage registers?

Also, she can't read Italian, and she would probably need the priest to help her find the correct entries in the registers.

Would this be likely?

Thanks,

Darin.

Hi,
the church has not yet been made safe after the earthquake of 2013, as told here:

http://www.noitv.it/2016/03/115508-115508/

I think it's still closed to the public, but better contact the Pro-loco (a non-profit territorial organization of public interest):

Hi Darin,

I've finally found Mazzei Stella's birth act. :-)
Her complete name is Maria Stella Oliva, she was born in Gello (hamlet of Camaiore) on March 17th 1808, daughter of Jacopo Mazzei (22 yo, laborer from Alpe di S. Pellegrino but residing in Gello) and Maria Guazzelli (23 yo, from Chiozza, farm hand).

Hi Erica.

Stella was born in 1808.

She is mentioned as the godmother of her nephew (Flipping Luigi Ricci) in Colognora in 1844. She would have been 36 years old.

As she is stated as 'Mazzei' on the birth record of her nephew, would that indicate that she wasn't married?

Or, if she was married would the register still have 'Mazzei' and not her married name?

I have searched the death records for Pescaglia, Stazzema and Lucca Town but there is no mention of a death of Stella Mazzei, Florinda Mazzei or Angela Mazzei.

I did, however find the 2nd Erminia Mazzei (spinster, died in Lucca Town in 1928) and her brother Giovanni Mazzei (died in Lucca Hospital in 1930).

Thanks again,

Darin.

It's probable but it's not for sure.

Or, if she was married would the register still have 'Mazzei' and not her married name?

Usually in the register you can find a woman indicated with her maiden name but sometimes I've found also the married name only.

I have searched the death records for Pescaglia, Stazzema and Lucca Town but there is no mention of a death of Stella Mazzei, Florinda Mazzei or Angela Mazzei.

Maybe they moved to another town or region, however I would search them in the nearest town e.g. Seravezza, Pietrasanta, Camaiore, Massarosa, Massa.

Erica

Hi Erica

I'm reading Stella's birth record again.

Do you think it could read her father as "Iacopo of Alpe son of Pellegrino."

As I know Iacopo's younger siblings were all born in Alpe di Stazzema and his father was called Pellegrino Mazzei.

Was 'Alpe di Stazzema' sometimes referred to as only Alpe?

Of do you think it definitely refers to Alpe di San Pellegrino?

Thanks again

Darin.

Hi Darin,
in her birth record it's written: "Jacopo Mazzei dell'Alpe di S.Pellegrino".
So Jacopo came from San Pellegrino in Alpe (hamlet of Castiglione di Garfagnana) not form Alpe di Stazzema.
Alpe di Stazzema sometimes is called Alpe, as abbreviation.

Erica
