Obituary
Frank "Chuck" Vicendese Jr.
Frank "Chuck" Vicendese Jr., a native son of Berkeley Heights, N.J., was received into God's most generous and merciful hands on Oct. 23, 2011. Visitation will be held in Paul Ippolito Berkeley Memorial, 646 Springfield Ave., Berkeley Heights, N.J., on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2011, from 4 to 7 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday in Little Flower Church at 10 a.m., followed by entombment in Somerset Hills Mausoleum, Basking Ridge, N.J. Mr. Vicendese was born on Dec. 24, 1931, in the homestead on the corner of Plainfield and Springfield avenues, Berkeley Heights, to Irene and Francesco Vicendese, and was the youngest of nine children. He was a member of the Marine Corps Reserves, a graduate of the University of Miami, and Seton Hall University, where he received his M.A. Mr. Vicendese was a beloved mentor, coach, teacher, and principal at various schools in Middlesex and Dunellen before leaving the public school system to join his brothers in the hardware business founded by their father in 1960, Berkeley Hardware & Mill Supplies. Mr. Vicendese was the consummate real estate developer and entrepreneur throughout his lifetime. He was the founder and builder of Warrenville Hardware, Flag Plaza, Arch Plaza, Keystone Corner, and Town Center in Warren, N.J., under the banner of Vicendese Family, Ltd. Mr. Vicendese took great pride and joy in the redevelopment of the "The Homestead" in downtown Berkeley Heights, as a tribute to his parents, which is known today as Heritage Square. He is best known for his love of his Catholic faith, family, friends, fast cars, roosters, cigars, and the American flag. The door to his office, and to his generous heart were open to all, and his irresistible sense of humor was his calling card. Mr. Vicendese will be long remembered as a man who lived his convictions out loud and inspired others to do the same. He touched the lives of many and was always grateful for those who offered him their friendship and love throughout the years. Mr. Vicendese was and remains deeply beloved. He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Dorothy (nee Andrews) Vicendese of Berkeley Heights; four loving children and their spouses, Frank Vicendese III of Warren, N.J., Mark and Marjorie Vicendese of Berkeley Heights, N.J., Stacey and Jeffrey Beer of Warren, N.J., and Andree and Edward Eisenberg of Green Brook, N.J.; 15 adoring grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Vicendese is also survived by his brother, Anthony (Lefty) Vicendese, and his sisters, Angela McCarthy, Anne Hilbert, Jean Zanengo, and Irene D'Alessio. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Runnells Foundation at Runnells Specialized Hospital, 40 Watchung Way, Berkeley Heights, N.J. 07922.
