Mazzei - Colognora di Val di Roggio, Pescaglia.

I have now discovered that my ancestors settled in Colognora di Val di Roggio, Pescaglia, Lucca, Tuscany.

I am looking for children of Iacopo Mazzei and (Maria) Rosa Guazzelli born between 1814-1818 and 1821-1832. (2 sons were born in Stazzema in 1819 and 1820 - I have those details).

Also children of Luigi Mazzei and (Maria) Rosa Lombardi born between 1832 and 1851.

These records are kept at the Archivio Arcivescovile di Lucca.

If anybody is visiting here could you please search the birth and death records for the town if Colognora di Val di Roggio for these years for Mazzei's.

It is not a big town so shouldn't be a big task. I have contacted the Archivio Arcivescovile di Lucca before and they sent me death details of Iacopo in Colognora 1850, but this took months and was very expensive.

There is an Ottavio Mazzei arrested in England in 1842 - an Italian Image Maker aged 17 - I am wondering if he is a son of Iacopo?

Also does anybody know if the Church in Colognora di Val di Roggio would have census records from 1820-1881.

Hi,
I should go to the Archivio Arcivescovile di Lucca for the research of my ancestors natives of Porcari, I hope next week, and so I could look for you too.
In the meantime I've found the birth of Mazzei M. (Maria) Felicita, daughter of Luigi (shoemaker)and Lombardi Rosa (farmer).
She was born on 7th March 1851 in Colognora, baptized the same day, godmother: Coselli M. Anna.

I had found the birth details of Maria Felicita Mazzei on antenati - thanks.

She died on 12th April 1851.

I realise I only need the details up until 1850 as antenati have them for Pescaglia starting from 1851.

well, I've found some information about Mazzei's.
First of all I think that Iacopo Mazzei moved to Colognora di Val di Roggio from Alpe di Stazzema in 1823 or a few years earlier because there are no births between 1814 and 1818 in Colognora.

The children of Iacopo and Maria Rosa Guazzelli (daughter of Marco from Chiozza) are:
- Maria Florinda born on April 8th 1823 in Colognora;
- Angela born on May 18th 1825 in Colognora;
- Maria Diomira born on June 23rd 1826 in Colognora;
- Teresa born on January 23rd 830 in Colognora and deceased on 1st February 1830 in Colognora;
- Ferdinando mentioned as brother of Diomira;
- Stella mentioned as daughther of Diomira.

Mazzei Luigi son of Iacopo from Alpe di Stazzema but residing in Colognora married Rosa Lombardi daughter of Giuseppe of deceased Simone from Colognora on January 15th 1832 in Colognora, witnesses: Gio. Domenico of Giovanni Frati and Luigi of Gio. Michele Avvanzini.

The children of Luigi and Maria Rosa Lombardi are:
- Maria Flavia born on October 16th 1832 in Colognora and deceased on February 8th 1833 in Colognora;
- Maria Flavia born on August 31st 1836 in Colognora and deceased on March 26th 1837 in Colognora;
- Maria Erminia born on March 14th 1838 in Colognora;
- Iacopo born on May 17th 1840 in Colognora and deceased on August 15th 1842 in Colognora;
- Gio. Cornelio born on September 16th 1842 in Colognora;
- Maria Adelaide born on October 141h 1844 in Colognora.

Mazzei Diomira daughter of Iacopo residing in Colognora married Ricci Giuseppe Domenico Raimodo son of deceased Filippo from Colognora on December 2nd 1843 in Colognora, witnesses: Raffaello of Michele Giusti and Luigi of Luigi Avanzini.

Diomira's son is Ricci Filippo Luigi, born on April 21st 1844, godfather: Ferdinando Mazzei brother of Diomira, godmother: Stella Mazzei sister of Diomira.

I will continue the research for the following years...

Can you confirm - at the top of the message you have Stella mentioned as daughter of Diomira.

At the bottom you have godmother Stella Mazzei - sister of Diomira.

Is the godmother meant to say daughter of Diomira?

It's a mistake, Stella is sister of Diomira.

Perhaps you already have these info: on Antenati I've found also Pellegrino son of Iacopo and Rosa Guazzelli born on April 8th 1811 in Alpe di Stazzema and Giovanni son of Iacopo and Rosa Guazzelli born on May 17th 1813 in Alpe di Stazzema.

There is a gap on Antenati for births in Alpe di Stazzema from 1818-1822.

Ferdinando Roberto Mazzei was born in 1819 in Alpe di Stazzema and died the same year.

My Gt-Gt-Gt Grandfather Ferdinando Roberto Mazzei was born in 1820 in Alpe di Stazzema.

I wonder if Stella Mazzei was born in Stazzema in either 1821 or 1822?

I contacted Antenati but they said those years must have been missing and they have no plans to re-check.

I know that the Archivio di Stato di Firenze have those years as they sent me both birth details for the above.

Giovanni, Pellegrino and Ferdinando all emigrated to Britain. They were Plaster Figure Makers.

There is a gap on Antenati for births in Alpe di Stazzema from 1818-1822.

The employee of the Archivio Diocesano di Pisa told me that in their archive there aren't records for Stazzema but the church in Stazzema have birth, marriage and death records also for the period 1818-1822.
Birth records start in 1524, marriage records in 1575, death records in 1572 and Stati d'anime (church census records) in 1682.

I've looked for the marriage act of Jacopo Mazzei and M.Rosa Guazzelli in Chiozza around 1808 but there aren't marriage records for that period.

Here the other info I've found....

The other children of Luigi Mazzei and Maria Rosa Lombardi are:
- Pellegrino Gaudenzio born on May 11st 1847 in Colognora and deceased of smallpox on September 26th 1848 in Colognora;
- Maria Erminia born on February 2nd 1849 in Colognora (godfather: Luigi of deceased Gio.Michele Orsi, godmother: M.Laura of deceased Simone Lombardi).

Their deceased children are:
- Gio. Cornelio (born on September 16th 1842) deceased after an illness on August 27th 1850 in Colognora;
- Maria Felicita (born on March 7th 1851) deceased on April 12th 1851 in Colognora.

Maria Rosa Lombardi's father:
- Giuseppe of deceased Simone Lombardi aged 74 died struck by sudden death on January 2nd 1849 in Colognora;
Maria Rosa Lombardi's mother:
- Maria Jacopa wife of Giuseppe Lombardi mentioned as nurse of the village who baptized Giuseppe son of Pasquale of Domenico of deceased Simone Lombardi and of M.Angela of Giuseppe of deceased Pasquino Frati on September 22th 1848 in Colognora (godfather: Vincenzo of deceased Gio.Domenico Orsi, godmother: M.Domenica of Domenico Lombardi).

A possible brother of Giuseppe Lombardi:
- Gio.Domenico of deceased Simone Lombardi native of Villa a Roggio and living in Colognora, aged 70 died, on November 8th 1850 in Colognora, his wife was:
- M. Anna wife of Domenico Lombardi deceased on October 13th 1850 in Colognora, aged 70 years 8 months and 2 days.

Apart from Maria Diomira Mazzei, it doesn't appear that Stella, Angela or Florinda Mazzei married in Colognora before 1851.

It also looks like the Maria Erminia Mazzei (born 14th March 1838) must have died before 1849, as they have named a 2nd daughter Maria Erminia Mazzei.

It doesn't look like she died in Colognora though.

I also thought that, I'll try to look again...

it doesn't appear that Stella, Angela or Florinda Mazzei married in Colognora before 1851.

I've looked for Mazzei surname and I haven't found them, also there are very few records of marriages.

Also, were there any other mention of the 'Ricci' family up to 1850?

The youngest son of Luigi was Giovanni Mazzei - born on1st August 1852 in Colognora.

He was also a Plaster Figure Maker.

He married in Nantes, France in 1881 to a French woman (Evarestine Marie Lemen).

Their only child Andre Louis Jean Mazzei was born in Havre, France in 1887.

They moved to England circa 1891.

Evarestine died in London in 1912.

Andre became a famous British Film Art Director (under the name Andrew Mazzei) and died in England in 1975.

Giovanni is last mentioned as living in Southampton, England in 1925 (aged 73) on Andrews' naturalisation record.

There is no death record for Giovanni in England after 1925.

If he returned to Pescaglia, is there an easy way to check for his death?

If there is no easy way then that is fine.
